In a Past Life

CPR didn′t work so I drove you to the hospital that day

Hands full of broken medicine and a bottle of the strongest stuff I could take

Didn't think I′d be around this long, but I knew

You knew, you were afraid

It was the thoughts that filled my mind as the ambulance came speeding towards the sidewalk

Shroud-covered flowers and bedsheets, tangled as the priest talks

You were a ghost haunting my life, I wasn't good enough

But just what did you think would happen?

I'd be wrong, wrong about you?

It was nothing but my fault, you were scared

And I remember the words that you said:

"Without you breathing

Never gonna hear you laughing

Never gonna take you riding

Never gonna say goodbye

Without you breathing,

Never gonna ride the A train

Never gonna ride that private plane

Into the sky

Before you die"

It was the thoughts that kept me going as the walls closed around my dreams

It was a night terror that reminded me to see

In that dream I′m unnamed and you were there, breaking at the seams

But it was not like you, it was like a reflection of me

Ghostly pale white, you didn′t know

And I didn't know, I was free

It′s not that dream I surrendered to,

It's just the door that blocks me from you

Without you breathing

Never gonna hear you laughing

Never gonna take you riding

Never gonna say goodbye

Without you breathing,

Never gonna ride the A train

Never gonna ride that private plane

Into the sky

Before you die

Before you die

When you called and said you were okay, I fell and cried

The tears welled up and I felt so weird inside

Your voice was the sound of the waves crashing down on those sunny days

And mine was the sound of the seashells being swept away
